I began to write this article with one simple viewpoint. I was fully ready to rant and rave about how much I wish I could get up in the morning and feel adequate without slapping on some colour and how much I hate society for thrusting unrealistic beauty standards in our faces. Then I stopped myself. Firstly, women: YOU ARE NOT OBLIGATED TO LOOK ‘PRETTY’ 24/7. It is indeed okay to wake up, stay in your slob clothes and shove your grease filled hair up in a bun and run around the house like a loon getting sweaty if you wish to do so. It is society that enforces this idea that women have to meet a certain standard or beauty ideal because it is ‘gross’ if we don’t. The second thing that occurred to me was that at first, I only saw this subject from one angle myself, which is exactly what I encourage people not to do. At the same time as waking up and thinking that I don’t want to bother with my face or hair or make any effort whatsoever, sometimes it is nice to try and I feel better for it. Why not this? I constantly hear women being put to shame for ‘concealing flaws’ or ‘changing their faces’ purely because they enjoy the art of putting on make up. Most women go through a hiatus in their 20s and early 30s when cycles are well established and they are symptom free. There is hope and help in the form of diet, lifestyle, herbs and/or progesterone treatment. To feel good you need to have a balance of estrogen to progesterone. Not only will they make you fat, the hormones they have been fed will be ingested and disrupt the delicate hormone balance needed to feel good. The actual name makes a difference because the media or ads may use the word progesterone but as you can see, it has been given many names and the side effects differ. Just think about it. Is a trans fat the same as an Omega 3 fat? No, and a synthetic progestin is not the same as a natural bioidentical progesterone. As a savvy consumer, check the study and labels and dont just count on the headlines. Most of the studies that hail the dangers of hormone replacement therapy or progesterone therapy are actually studies that look at sub populations or different aspects of the infamous Womens Health Initiative. That study had many flaws and only studied synthetic hormones. Here are some of the flaws: Average age of participants was 63. Most women were 10 years past menopause. A high percentage of the study participants were smokers and at high risk of heart disease. The compounds used were Premarin or conjugated equine estrogen (CEE) made from horse urine, and/orProvera or medroxyprogesterone acetate(MPA) or Prempro which is a combination of CEE and MPA. The doses used are high compared to what is used now and were fixed and not individualized, meaning a 200 pound woman got the same dose as a 100 pound woman. The conclusions after years of studying the study were that estrogen alone did not significantly increase the risk of breast cancer, the use of progestin did increase the risk of breast cancer. If you have symptoms of low hormones, the earlier you start the better and it is best to start within the first 5 years using the lowest dose possible. Although most of the studies were done on menopausal women, progesterone has benefits throughout a womans life and is often the cause of many of the unpleasant symptoms that occur during certain parts of the menstrual cycle, pregnancy, and metabolic disturbances regardless of cycle time. Natural bioidentical hormones have been studies and have many positive effects. Some even showed decreased risk of breast cancer. Benefits of Progesterone Treatment Studies were done on natural bioidentical estrogen and progesterone treatment comparing it to treatment with synthetic hormones. The E3N cohort study by Agn&egrave,s Fournier, Franco Berrino and Fran&ccedil,oise Clavel-Chapelon found the following: Estrogen given &lt,10years after menopause protects women from heart disease and all cause mortality. Natural progesterone with estrogens confers less or even no risk of breast cancer as opposed to the use of other synthetic progestins. Even now, new studies keep being published on the same subjects used in the WHI Womens Health Initiative study, which used only synthetic hormones on high risk subjects. Become an educated consumer to determine which treatment options are right for you. Dont be scared by headlines. Most women in their early years are deficient in progesterone and wont need estrogen until they enter menopause. Got PMS? Bloating, weight gain, mood swings, cramps, headaches, tension, anger,anxiety, irritability, cravings, increased appetite, tender breasts and fluid retention are hallmarks of premenstrual syndrome fondly known as PMS. These symptoms generally peak a week or two before your period and then go away only to start again. Dont underestimate the impact that this can have on your life, productivity, relationships and wellbeing. It affects about 40% of women of childbearing age. Aside from the discomfort, it can be debilitating and about 5% of women suffer from severe mood symptoms that can cause dysfunctional relationships. This form is known as PMDD premenstrual dysphoric disorder. While no one size fits all, there is treatment for PMS to relieve the symptoms. There are many natural and some pharmaceutical solutions to alleviate symptoms. Here are some that have some good studies to support their effectiveness. Chasteberry is an herb also known as Vitex agnus-castus that has been used in the treatment for PMS and has been used for menstrual disorders, fertility, PCOS and acne. Studies have shown significant relief of symptoms such as irritability, depressed mood, anger, headache, bloating, breast fullness, skin disorder, fatigue, drowsiness, and sleeplessness. The rate of response increased over time and 91% of participants had no or only mild symptoms. The dose used was 20mg of a standardized extract. Calcium has many studies indicating it is a good treatment for PMS symptoms. College students that took 500 600 mg of calcium carbonate twice a day had decreased symptoms of tiredness, cravings, and depression. Aerobic Exercise is also a beneficial treatment for PMS. Studies indicated that t increased red blood cell count and lowered estrogen, progesterone and prolactin resulting in improvement of symptoms such as fatigue, poor concentration and PMS symptoms. Yoga has been shown to be a helpful treatment for PMS. In a randomized controlled study, yoga participants who practiced for 35-40 minutes per day, had lower body weight, heart rate, systolic and diastolic blood pressure as well as a decrease in anger, depression and anxiety. Acupuncture can be used as a treatment for PMS. It showed a 50% or better relief of symptoms. Omega 3 fatty acids have also been used as a treatment for PMS. Study participants who took 2 grams per day had a reduction in symptoms of depression, nervousness, anxiety, and lack of concentration. Omega 3 fatty acids may also reduce bloating, headache and breast tenderness. These effects increased by longer duration of treatment. Diet is also a treatment for PMS. Limitation of salt, caffeine, chocolate, alcohol and fat is and increasing complex carbohydrates is recommended for 2-3 months to alleviate or eradicate symptoms. Progesterone is used as a treatment for PMS and menstrual migraine when progesterone is low in comparison to estrogen.
